Laura obtained her PhD from the University of Manitoba in Canada in 2016. She moved to the Institut Langevin (ESPCI) in Paris, France for postdoctoral work, and performed a second postdoc at the University of Auckland before becoming an independent Research Fellow there. In 2024, she settled into a Senior Lecturer position at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch.
Laura’s primary research area is Waves in Complex Media. She uses classical waves (sound and light) for (i) characterization and imaging, and (ii) studying fundamental wave phenomena. These goals intersect in the effort to characterize heterogeneous and unusual media. Her current projects include flexible imaging/sensing with sensor arrays and exploring the mechanical/acoustic properties of exotic materials.
The fun thing about wave physics is that, with the conceptual and theoretical similarities between different kinds of waves, the crossovers between different fields are endless.
