A highlight this quarter was the announcement that Co-Directors Professor Nicola Gaston and Professor Justin Hodgkiss had been appointed Fellows of the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi (FRSNZ). "For us this honour is all the more special because Professor Gaston and Professor Hodgkiss follow in the path of both our founder Sir Paul Callaghan and our namesake Alan MacDiarmid." Welcome to our first newsletter of 2023, which comes hot on the heels of our hugely successful conference on Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology (AMN10) in Rotorua last month. The biennial conference was attended by nearly 500 scientists, mostly from overseas, who were welcomed with a powhiri from Ngāti Whakaue. In her opening speech, the Minister for Research, Science, and Innovation, Hon. We are very happy to be able to tell you that the MacDiarmid Institute has been refunded. 2019 has been another successful year for the Institute. This year four of our researchers were awarded medals at the Royal Society Honours Awards for excellent achievement in their respective fields.
