Biography

Professor Sally McArthur joined Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, in February 2026.

As a member of Te Hiwa, the University’s senior leadership team, Sally contributes to the formulation and implementation of University-wide strategies and policies. In her role as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), she has responsibility for developing and implementing strategies and processes to achieve the research objectives in the University’s Strategic Plan.

Sally's focus is on enabling researchers to achieve excellence, furthering partnerships across sectors, and ensure the University's work delivers meaningful impact for Aotearoa New Zealand and the global community. Her team includes the Faculty of Graduate Research, the Research Office, and the research institutes. She is Chair of the Research Trust, the University Research Committee and she sits on the board of Wellington UniVentures.

Across her career, Sally has led various teams to create several initiatives at the interface between commercialisation, entrepreneurship, and research translation, including Swinburne’s Innovation Precinct, the Victorian Medical Device Partnering Program, and the Australian Research Council Training Centre in Biodevices.
