Fully funded PhD scholarships available

26 April, 2022

The MacDiarmid Institute is offering fully funded PhD scholarships within our new Research Programmes all across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Each scholarship is worth NZD$35,000 per annum (not taxed), plus all student fees.

See here for the full list of PhD Scholarships available funded by the MacDiarmid Institute and how to apply.

All our research is organised into four research programmes:

Our research programmes explore aspects of advanced materials science and nanotechnology and link researchers and students across biology, physics, materials science, mātauranga Māori, engineering and chemistry.

We are a Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE). Our virtual Institute spans across five of New Zealand’s universities - the University of Auckland, Massey University, Victoria University of Wellington, the University of Canterbury and the University of Otago - along with government innovation agency, Callaghan Innovation, and GNS Science, the country’s leading provider of Earth, geoscience and isotope research.

MacDiarmid Institute PhD students will be encouraged and financially supported to take advantage of the many opportunities we provide to broaden your experience and skills.

Activities available for PhD scholarship students include:

  • 3-6 month industry internships
  • Annual multi-day workshops on specialist topics such as communication, commercialisation and leadership
  • Intensive annual multi-day bootcamps (held in remote and beautiful locations) where experts share their knowledge in an important current research area
  • Outreach events, working with school teachers or school children
  • Membership of the MacDiarmid Emerging Scientists Association (MESA), run by students and postdocs, which organises additional activities.
