Paul completed his PhD in chemistry at the University of Auckland before moving to the University of Nottingham Centre for Sustainable Chemistry, where he studied organic solar cell materials. After first returning to the University of Auckland, he joined Te Herenga Waka | Victoria University of Wellington as a MacDiarmid Institute Research Fellow working in the ultrafast spectroscopy group led by Professor Justin Hodgkiss.
