Associate Professor Natalie Plank

Dr Natalie Plank is Deputy Director for Commercialisation and Industry Engagement and an Associate Professor in Physics in the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences at Victoria University of Wellington. Natalie completed a BSc (Hons) in Astrophysics at The University of Edinburgh before doing an MSc in Microelectronics. She then completed her PhD on the functionalisation of carbon nanotubes for molecular electronics with Rebecca Cheung also at The University of Edinburgh.

My entire scientific career is based on a bet over a pitcher of beer, when I bet that I would be able to measure the molecular scale heat in haemoglobin, and my advisor said it couldn’t be done. I did manage to, and this set me off in the direction my career has taken.

Searching for high temperature superconductors

Superconductors already have various applications (electromagnets, digital circuits, particle detectors) but would be even more useful if they operated at higher temperatures.
