Dr Prasanth Gupta

Dr Prasanth Gupta completed his PhD with the Victoria University of Wellington and GNS Science in 2017. His doctoral work was focused on synthesis of novel transition metal-based nanoparticles in carbon matrices by ion beam engineering and studying their resultant structural and magnetic properties. During his PhD he worked part-time in GNS Science to develop isotopically pure silicon for quantum computing. He now works as a scientist at the Materials Team of GNS Science. He has worked on several MBIE-funded projects with applications targeting development of novel materials and innovative processes for sustainable low-carbon future.

Dr Kai Chen

Kai received his PhD in physics from Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) in 2015. He then worked as a Postdoc Fellow in the Ultrafast Spectroscopy group at VUW under Dr Justin Hodgkiss’s supervision. Before joining VUW, he had research experience at Academia Sinica and earned his bachelor's degree in physics and master's in electronic engineering from National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan.

Dr Luke Liu

Luke completed his PhD on multicomponent metal-organic frameworks with Prof Shane Telfer at Massey University. He then moved to Northwestern University as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Prof T. David Harris’ lab working on 2D metal-organic magnetic semiconductors. He was appointed as a Lecturer in Inorganic Chemistry at Victoria University of Wellington in 2020 and lead the Porous Materials Research Group.

Associate Professor Steven Matthews

Steven’s PhD in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, The University of Auckland (2004), focused on the high temperature erosion-corrosion mechanisms of Cr3C2-NiCr high velocity thermal sprayed coatings. From 2004–2007 he was employed as a R&D Manager for Bekaert Advanced Coatings, Belgium. His focus was on the development of sputtering targets for the large area glass and electronics industries. This incorporated projects on materials as diverse as Zn, Si, TiO2 and novel electronic materials, that spanned from powder feedstock preparation, industrial thermal spray production, and failure analysis.

Dr Kim McKelvey

Kim's background encompasses mathematics, software engineering, physical chemistry, and electrochemistry. He completed a Bachelor and Masters in Computational Modelling at the University of Otago in New Zealand. He then worked in the computer games industry for NaturalMotion, designing artificial intelligence and physical simulation solutions for 3D character animation. Kim completed his PhD in the Electrochemistry & Interfaces Group at the University of Warwick in the UK through the MOAC doctoral training centre in 2013. After post-doc positions at the University of Notre Dame and the University of Utah, he started as an Assistant Professor at Trinity College Dublin in 2017. In 2020, he moved to Victoria University of Wellington as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences.

Professor Patricia Hunt

Patricia joined Victoria University of Wellington in 2020 as a Professor of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, moving to NZ from her previous position as Professor at Imperial College London, UK.  Tricia is a world leading expert on molecular level interactions within liquids/solvents, particularly in understanding ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents/electrolytes.  She is an expert in molecular orbital theory and hydrogen bonding.  Tricia obtained her PhD in Theoretical Chemistry from the University of Auckland.  She went on to undertake Post Doc positions at King's College London and then Cambridge University, UK.  She then stayed in the UK securing a prestigious Royal Society University Research Fellowship at Imperial College London.

Dr Mathew Anker

Mathew completed his PhD in 2017 on alkaline earth mediated carbon monoxide reduction at the University of Bath (UK) under the supervision of Prof. Mike Hill. During his PhD he undertook a brief secondment to The Ohio State University (USA) to work under the late Prof. Malcolm Chisholm, to work on catalytic lactide polymerisation. He then moved to Victoria University of Wellington to work as a postdoctoral researcher for Prof. Martyn Coles on the synthesis and reactivity of low valent main group complexes, he is now a Senior Lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington, where he arrived in 2019.
